ICW team up with Lions Club of Perak Silver State, RT Jelapang and Kinta AA to help promote 3R

24 July 2016

Ipoh City Watch (ICW) participated in Ipoh Car Free day for the 5th time today. Over 3,000 people converged at Jln Raja DiHilir (Jln Tambun) in Ipoh since 7 am either to have a brisk walking, jogging, participate in Aerobic session or cycling.

For ICW, our objective has always been to make Ipoh the most liveable city in Malaysia. The recent recognition given by Lonely Planets which declared Ipoh as the only city in Malaysia and 6th city to visit in Asia, has encouraged more people to come forward to help promote cleanliness.

Today, ICW was joined by Lions Club of Perak Silver State, RT Jelapang and Kinta Athletics Association to promote 3R. Over 100 signatures were collected within 2 hours from the public. Apart from that we hold placard with messages to get the public to be responsible and to keep Ipoh clean.

Ipoh City Council mayor, Dato Zamri Man, was one of the participants who have always shown appreciation of what we did. He gave his words of encouragement as he cycled pass our booth which is next to the Japanese Garden.

Tuan Zakuan, Ipoh City Council Secretary and Tuan Zulqarnain Ahmad have also dropped by at our booth to pledge for recycling and to support our good cause.

In conjunction with the Ipoh City Council's monthly car free day yesterday morning along Jalan Raja DiHilir, members of the non-governmental organisation (NGO) Ipoh City Watch (ICW) promoted its healthy living lifestyle at the Old Town sector of the city.
Led by president Prof Dr Richard Ng, members of the group gathered at the Birch Memorial Clock Tower at 7am and gradually walked 2km over to Ipoh City Hotel, Jalan Dass, passing through the popular Old Town Heritage trail and Memory Lane Sunday market.
The "Heritage Trail Walk" was organised in conjunction with Ipoh Car Free day to promote healthy living, recycling and reduction in carbon emissions.
State committee chairman for Women, Family, Social Welfare, Housing and Local Government Datuk Rusnah Kassim thanked Ng for the positive message promoted by the ICW.
“The walk by ICW will help to inculcate a cleanliness habit in the city,” said Rusmah.
“There is only so much that the state government can do. However, with help from NGOs like ICW, Ipoh will regain its history of being the cleanest and most livable city in the country.”
Those taking part in the walk carried posters reminding residents to help make Ipoh the most livable city in Malaysia and to practice the 3R concept of recycle, reuse and reduce waste.
“The goal of walking through the Heritage Trail was to remind traders it is a tourist area and every effort should be taken to keep it clean and tidy at all times” said Ng.
The members repeated the same message when they stopped at Ladies Lane in front of a hotel and held a signature campaign encouraging customers to embrace the 3Rs and help keep Ipoh clean.
Royal Malaysian Air Force technician Jusrini Aizan, who signed the banner, said the awareness campaign was a positive effort.
“This action to have a clean Ipoh should apply to the whole country. If everyone did their part everywhere would be clean” said Jusrini. – February 29, 2016.

Create Space For Pedestrians And Cyclists - Ipoh Echo

1 Nov 2015 by Dr. Richard Ng

On Sunday, October 18, Ipoh City Watch (ICW) was invited to participate in the inaugural Ipoh Car Free Day along with some government agencies, tourism-related companies and an environment-related non-governmental organisation. The programme aims to turn Ipoh into a low-carbon-emission city and the people into a low-carbon community. It also aims to create awareness of a healthy lifestyle where the people can cycle, skateboard, roller-skate and walk freely without any vehicles on the roads.
The event, which coincides with the launch of the refurbished Perak Tourism Centre and Ipoh Heritage Trail footprint, was officiated by Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri DiRaja Dr Zambry Abd Kadir. Present were Dato’ Nolee Ashlin Mohd Radzi, State Exco for Tourism, Dato’ Hj Mohd Gazali Jalal, Perak State Treasurer and Ipoh’s mayor, Dato’ Zamri Man.
We jumped at the opportunity given to us by Ipoh City Council for two reasons; to prove that ICW is not anti-government but rather the eyes, ears and mouths of Ipohites. And to hold true to our vision of making Ipoh the most liveable city in Malaysia, the same aspiration Mayor Dato’ Zamri has.
Led by our Hon. Secretary Victor Chew and assisted by 12 other members, ICW put up a display of buntings, banners and multimedia to showcase our past performances in line with our objective of making Ipoh the most liveable city in Malaysia. It was the very first public project for us and I would say it was a fantastic job by our volunteers. As the President of ICW, I must say I am very proud of what they have done.
We took the opportunity to educate the public on 3R to help make Ipoh City clean through our compost demonstration, flyers and 3R signature pledge. Among the VIPs who made their pledge to support the 3R campaign were Dato’ Seri DiRaja Dr Zambry Abd Kadir, Dato’ Haji Mohd. Gazali bin Jalal, Dato’ Nolee Radzi and Dato’ Zamri Man.
The Ipoh City Council has done a good job in organising this event. The turnout was below expectation, especially at the booths set up for Ipohites to view. It was probably due to lack of publicity and information made available. More could be done in the future.
The Car Free Day will be meaningless if it is not properly promoted and no spaces are provided for pedestrians and cyclists. I wish to echo what Dato’ Rusnah Kassim said during her Executive Talk to Ipoh City Council staff on Wednesday, October 14. She said that the city’s public transport system should be improved so Ipohites would opt for public transport to commute within the city.
For ICW, the event too has given us an opportunity to talk face-to-face with the mayor. I managed to raise several issues such as lack of support from the councillors on our programmes to educate the public on their responsibilities in making Ipoh clean. I also urge the mayor to enforce a ruling requiring ‘pasar malam’ traders and restaurant operators along the Ipoh Heritage Trail to clear their garbage and place it in a proper garbage bin to prevent the habit of convenient dumping which is the primary cause of illegal dump sites.
City Council must direct its workers to clear up pedestrian walkways in housing estates which are covered with grass over the years. What is the point of forcing developers to build walking paths when they are not maintained by the Council? This will help encourage healthy living among residents.

ICW participates in Ipoh's Inaugural Car-Free Day

18 Oct 2015

By Dr. Richard Ng

Ipoh City Watch was invited to participate in the Car-Free Day cum the launch of Ipoh Heritage Footprint. We were among 10 govt agencies and NGOs which were given a booth to display and promote our activities.

Headed by our Hon. Secretary Victor Chew, a group of 12 ICW Members were at hand helping out with the buntings, banners and  a LCD display unit putting up the work done by ICW to help make Ipoh the most liveable city in Malaysia.

Perak SWCorp was kind enough to lend us their 3R boxes to help us promote Recycling. We managed to get the Signature Banner ready for participants to make a pledge on 3R efforts. Among those who make a pledge this morning include the Perak MB YAB Dato Seri Dr. Zambry Abd Kadir, State Treasurer YB Dato Ghazali, Mayor Dato Zamri Man and State Exco for Tourism, YB Dato Nolee Radzi.

Participants were treated to a Zumba dance session before the start of the event which was eventually joined in by Dr. Zambry, Dato Ghazali, Dato Nolee and Dato Zamri Man who came on a bicycle ride.

I had the opportunity to speak to the mayor directly on our concern towards the cleanliness of Ipoh City especially be traders and restaurant operators who dumped their garbage after business hours without the use of garbage bins. I also pointed out on ICW's roles in educating the public to be responsible towards the cleanliness of the city.

It was a good start for Ipoh City Council and we hope more publicity is done to get the participation of more people. We also urged the mayor to provide proper space for pedestrians and cyclists in the future.

Car Free Day towards turning Ipoh into low carbon city - The Malaysian Insider

18 Oct 2015

Car Free Day is aimed at turning Ipoh into a low carbon emission city and the people into a low carbon community, says Dato Seri Zambry Abd kadir.

Zambry said Ipoh had achieved another milestone through the programme, which had been implemented in other cities in Malaysia and around the world.

“The programme creates awareness of a healthy lifestyle and the people can cycle, skateboard, rollerskate and walk about freely without any vehicles on the roads.

“We have also received positive feedback from various parties about the programme, including the Sultan of Perak (Sultan Nazrin Shah) who hopes to join the programme in the future,” he told reporters after attending the programme at Padang Ipoh today.

About 5,000 people, including mayor Datuk Zamri Man, state exco members and government department heads took part in the programme organised by Ipoh City Council.

Roads closed to traffic were Jalan Raja DiHilir, from the Sultan Yussuf roundabout near the menteri besar’s official residence to the Sultan Iskandar roundabout near Jalan Towers; Jalan Kelab Golf, from the Jalan Tun Suffian interchange to Jalan Raja DiHilir; Jalan Watson; and Jalan Dato Seri Shaari (Jalan Garland).

Free health checks, aerobics sessions, cultural and children’s activities were variously offered by KPJ Hospitals, Perpustakaan Negeri and Persatuan Interaksi Kebudayaan Malaysia.

Zambry said the state government hoped to turn Ipoh into a green city to preserve the environment.

Dato Seri Dr. Zambry was seen signing the Recycling Pledge put up by Ipoh City Watch

“For a start, Menteri Besar Incorporated has started programmes to plant trees and place antique chairs at several strategic spots in the city. I hope everyone can do their part to ensure the success of the programme,” he said. – Bernama, October 18, 2015.

Ipoh will host its first car-free day, encouraging drivers to travel in a more environmentally friendly fashion, on October 18.
For three hours, from 7am to 10am, an area including Jalan Raja Di-Hilir, the roundabout in front of the menteri besar’s residence to the Sultan Abdul Aziz roundabout and sideroads, Jalan Golf Kelab, Jalan Caldwell, and Sultan Abdul Aziz Recreation Park will be closed to motorised transport.
According to Ipoh City Council (MBI), the car-free day is just “a trial run” to test how popular it will be with residents.
Mayor Datuk Zamri Man said, after a recent council full board meeting, that certain routes would be designated vehicle-free for three hours on a specific date, if the residents supported the move.
“We are looking to gain support from residents in the chosen areas before finalising. Currently, we are engaging local community leaders and have so far received a positive response.
“The aim is to encourage people to walk, jog or cycle,” he said.
“We plan to have car-free days only on Sundays.”
He said the plan was to start with a monthly event and later increase this to once a fortnight.
Zamri said MBI would be approaching the residents for feedback, but those who the council could not get in contact with could submit their views at the MBI office.
The World Car-Free Day was on September 22. According to the Washington Post, the event “promotes improvement of mass transit, cycling and walking, and the development of communities where jobs are closer to home and where shopping is within walking distance.”
The first car-free days were organised in Reykjavik, Iceland, in Bath, UK, and in La Rochelle, France. – October 10, 2015.
