IPOH: Sebanyak 65 buah premis kedai serbaneka 7-Evelen sekitar Ipoh kini dilengkapi kamera litar tertutup (CCTV) Safecam.

‘Turning socks into snowmen’ project teaches young about charity - Malaysiakini

19 Dec 2016

The noble idea of a father, Andy Chan. has helped to kick-start a charitable cause to raise funds for a home for abused women in Klang.
Chan, whose 11-year-old daughter, Isabelle recently organised a workshop to teach primary school children how to turn white socks into cute little snowmen, said the fundraising project was intended to encourage young people to think about giving to charity.

“We are not only teaching them some art and craft, where the finished products end up collecting dust or in the waste paper basket,” Chan said. “We want them to think about other people who are less privileged than themselves.”
In the process, Chan said that the early exposure to entrepreneurship will also help the children to become good businessmen in future. They feel proud about their handicraft when people start buying from them.
“The beauty of this idea is that it is duplicable,” he said. “Each snowman is sold at RM20.With each child producing six snowmen, they will be able to raise RM120 each just by selling to family and friends.”
Enthusiastic response
At their home in Kelana Jaya last Thursday afternoon, the Chan family helped some 10 other kids and their parents to make the snowmen.

Eight-year-old Shaun Ng became excited when he managed to sell his first two snowmen to a neighbour, who told him that that the snowmen looked so cute.
“I am going to make more snowmen, and raise more money to help feed the people in the home,” he said, adding that he now has a back order of some 40 snowmen. He is trying hard to recruit his five-year-old sister Alyson as a partner in the project to help meet the demand.
“One generous lady, in particular, offered to buy 20 snowmen,” he said. “RM400 may be a small amount of money for some people, but it will certainly go a long way to help the old folks.”
Another eight-year-old from Becon House Sri Inai International School, Swarnina Poddar, said that after learning to make the snowmen, she now hopes to volunteer herself to help out whenever there is another workshop conducted.
“I enjoy raising funds for the poor,” she said. “This may be the first time I am doing it, but it will certainly not be the last.”
Six-year-old Teoh Enjie said it was fun to make the snowmen toys to sell. “What I like about this workshop is that I can bring a smile to the old people at the home,” he said. His friend, June Mulquiney, five, said she also enjoyed making the snowmen. “Mum will help to sell the snowmen to raise funds for the poor,” she said.
Aerin Tham said it is cool being able to help the needy. The 11-year-old from Nobel International School said that at the same time, he had lots of fun making the snowmen.
Hailing from Puay Chai (2) in Bandar Utama, seven-year-old Chong Ray Shuen said she has learnt about helping othersfrom the workshop which includes overcoming her fears, especially of approaching others to buy the snowmen that she made for charity’s sake.
“That's my greatest accomplishment!” she said.
Together they hope to raise at least RM1,000 to buy foodstuff that can be given to Rumah Grace in Pandamaran, Klang. Last year, Chan said Isabelle came up with another idea of turning trash into cash to buy food for charity.
“This was when we started using old socks and other recyclable materials to make the snowmen,” he said. “However, this year, the idea has evolved into making more snowmen using socks that can be purchased cheaply from the wholesalers.”
Chan, a corporate trainer, said he is happy to share the idea with other non-governmental organisations. “We try to make the fundraising project as duplicable as possible,” he said. “After attending one or two sessions, even a child as young as eight can start teaching her own friends how to make the snowmen. We need to inculcate in them the love for people who may not be as privileged as themselves.”

Recycling goes high-tech - Star Metro Perak

28 Nov 2016

With him are (from left) Ng, Zamby’s political secretary Datuk Ahmad Shalimin Ahmad Shaffie, state financial officer Datuk Mohd Ghazali Jalal, Taiping Municipal Council president Datuk Abdul Rahim Md Ariff and state executive councillors Datuk Nolee Ashilin Mohd Radzi (partially hidden, blue helmet) and Datuk Samsudin Abu Hassan.

THE Kohijau-iCycle recycling reward point system by Koperasi Alam Hijau Perak Bhd (Kohijau) has been extended to Taiping.
The programme, which allows the people to embrace the 3R (reduce, reuse, recycle) culture, was launched by Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir at the Taiping Lake Gardens during the Perak Government Leaders’ Retreat in Taiping on Wednesday.
Kohijau chairman Dr Richard Ng said since its launch on Oct 15, over 300 people had registered as members and contributed over 4,000kg of recyclables.
“Currently, there are seven Kohijau-iCycle recycling bins located in Jelapang Tambahan, SMK Raja Chulan, Loyal Garden Residences on Jalan Sultan Nazrin Shah, Desa Tambun Indah, and GP Food Court Buntong in Ipoh; Kuala Sepetang and now in Taiping.
“More locations will be set up soon for the convenience of members,” he said.
Taking the current population of Perak at 2.4 million, Ng said it was estimated that a total of 16,000 tonnes of garbage was being generated each month.
“If nothing is done by the year 2020, Perak will have a total of 768,000 tonnes of garbage ending up in its landfills, illegal dumpsites or the ocean,” he added.
Ng said Kohijau-iCycle members were expected to help increase the recycling rate in the state from the current 5% to at least 30% by 2020.
“In the near future, once Kohijau introduces organic waste composting, the recycling rate in some communities should be as high as 60%,” he added.
Those keen to participate in the recycling reward point system must first register via http://icycle-global.com – registration is open to any interested individual without any charge.
“Upon successful registration, members will be provided with bar code stickers.
“They can then collect their recyclables and place them in either a bag or box. The bar code sticker is then stuck to the bag or box before it is dropped into the designated Kohijau-iCycle recycling bins.
“The recyclables will then be collected, scanned and updated into the member’s respective accounts.
“The points can be exchanged for cash or coupons to buy household goods from Tesco or Aeon. They can also choose to donate to charitable organisations,” Ng explained.

Ng added that a portion of the profits generated through Kohijau would be ploughed back to the society including non-governmental organisations to help keep the environment clean.

13 Nov 2016 by JAG

KOHIJAU-ICycle who launched their Recycle System at Kuala Sepetang this morning with the installation of their recycle bin got off to a strong start with 200 residents signing up with the system.

“Talking about recycling is a big challenge in Kuala Sepetang fishing village. We have 800 households and a population of 3000.

“It will take some time for the residents to participate in recycling. Hopefully with the launch today we have kickstarted and will be able to create the awareness to sustain a recycling system”

Chua added that the effort to create awareness as continuous.

“We started trying to recruit members since August. While we are happy that 200 of them have registered to participate in this system we are still looking for more members.

“Similarly we are happy that KOHIJAU has supported us with their recycle bin though we will need a few more going forward” said Chua.

KOHIJAU Chairman Ng said the residents were generally positive of their recycle system which rewards contributors with points which can be ex-changed with cash or products similar to the Bonus Link system.

To participate in the program residents have to register with ICycle to receive an account number and barcode stickers.

Residents will pack their recyclables in plastic bags, place their barcode sticker on the bag and dispose the bag at the ICycle recycle bin.

Greener Ipoh by KOHIJAU - Ipoh Echo

For the love they have to make Ipoh the most liveable city in Malaysia, Associate Professor Dr Richard Ng, the President of Ipoh City Watch (ICW) and his team founded the Koperasi Alam Hijau Perak Berhad (KOHIJAU) with a mission to promote recycling for a sustainable environment as part of the Social Business City adopted by Ipoh.

Within a year, ICW managed to collect over 7000kg of recyclable items under its collaborating programmes with Perak SWCorp involving 250 houses in Jelapang. As they earned about RM3000, Dr Richard believes in the potential of making recycling an opportunity to promote social enterprise.

“After a successful campaign at Jelapang Tambahan, we gathered all our members from ICW and set up KOHIJAU to further improve the livelihood of the people while we do our part in keeping the environment clean,” said Dr Richard during the official launching of KOHIJAU on September 17.

The launching was attended not only by the dedicated members of ICW and KOHIJAU, but also the ADUN of Hulu Kinta, Datuk Aminuddin Md Hanafiah who applauded KOHIJAU. “I would like to congratulate Dr Richard, my former teacher, on his hard work and dedication to create a greener Ipoh.

There is only so much Ipoh city council can do but we hope with the help of KOHIJAU and ICW, Ipoh will perhaps one day, be once again, the city known for its cleanliness,” said Aminuddin. To further enhance the recycling business that will definitely benefit both state and public, KOHIJAU has partnered up with ICycle Malaysia. iCycle is providing a business system which allows recyclables collectors and contributors to earn Recycling Points which can be exchanged with cash or products, a system that is similar to Bonus Link.

The system will be first tested at Ipoh Loyal Apartment, courtesy of KOHIJAU in partnership with Winland Resources Sdn Bhd, the developer of the property. Aside from the apartment, Jelapang, Desa Tambun Indah and SMK Raja Chulan will also be part of the programme. Participating parties will receive account numbers and special bar-codes to stick on their recycling box or bags for tracking purposes. Their collection will then be updated into their personal account which can be checked via internet.

RM1 Juta Untuk Cantas Pokok - Suara Perak

October 4, 2016
